  About the Walks & talks
  

  Be guided by members of the North Shore Group of the Australian Plants Society on a walk in the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden to see and learn about our wonderful native plants as they come into flower.

  These sessions are free.

  No prior knowledge is required. Information sheets will be provided. Please bring your own name tag.

  Meet at 9.45 am at Caley’s Patio (behind Caley’s Pavilion) in KWG.
  

  No booking necessary.

  Walks are easy/medium. Sessions run 10am to about 12 noon. Please wear a hat, have suitable footwear and carry water/snack. Sunscreen and insect repellent would also be a good idea.

  About the presentation -  

  Our very own Shirley McLaran will be the Presenter for our next meeting on Saturday 11^th May, 2024.

  Shirley’s experience as a Botanist, passionate teacher of bush regeneration and a forager for pea flowers, has led her to revive the Pea Flower Study Group where she is able to share knowledge with others, using iNaturalist, to learn more about her favourite plant group.

  iNaturalist Australia, an online social network, is where animal and plant observations and information can be recorded, identified, shared and  collected with this data being collated for science and the conservation of our natural environment.

  Shirley will show us the tips and tricks on How to become a Citizen Scientist connecting us to nature, our observations of biodiversity from across our local area contributing to and being shared by others.  As well as enhancing our community database, this information will provide statistics and connection to a community of millions of people, including Scientists and Naturalists worldwide.

  About Shirley -  

  Shirley’s love of Australian native plants began in 1996 when she enrolled in a TAFE horticultural course to learn about soils and nutrients. A passionate bush regeneration teacher encouraged her to attend the Queensland Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) spring flower show and she was hooked from that day. Shirley joined the Pine Rivers Branch and quickly became obsessed with the desire to know which family each species belonged to, and why. Before long, she became an Australian Native Plants Society Australia (ANPSA) biennial conference junkie, where she eagerly learned from other ‘plant people’. Shirley was especially amazed by the diversity of pea-flowered plants.

  In 2014, Shirley’s passion for plant identification and classification led her to undertake a Bachelor of Science, majoring in botany, at the University of New England. During her studies, she was accepted to participate in the Volunteer Botanical Training Program at the Australian National Herbarium. At the ANPSA biennial conference in Albany in 2019, she volunteered to revive the Pea Flower Study Group seeing it as an outlet to share knowledge with others and learn more about her favourite plant group.

  Shirley’s passions for foraging for pea flowers and citizen science go hand in hand.

  Background: Nadiah is a biologist from Canberra, with a background in Zoology and Tropical Ecology. Since joining the Australian Museum Herpetology team in 2020, Nadiah has had the pleasure of working as the Project Coordinator of FrogID. In this presentation, we'll delve into the FrogID project, highlighting how frog call recordings submitted by FrogID participants are advancing national frog research and conservation, including the scientific discovery of new frog species.

  A wonderful opportunity for those who saw or missed the segment by Costa on the Community Environment Centre on Gardening Australia in November 2023 to visit the Centre and have a guided tour around it.
  The Community Environment Centre is an educational resource, community hub and environmental demonstration site for residents, visitors, and volunteers on various topics such as gardening, planting natives and sustainability in the home and backyard.
  Explore the demonstration gardens that promote nature, sustainability, biodiversity, easy care and wildlife habitats.
  These gardens, operated by The Hills Shire Council, were established and are maintained by passionate volunteers, including APS members.
  Volunteers will show you around our native plant garden, thriving vegetable garden, bush tucker garden and food for wildlife garden.

  APS NSW Annual General Meeting, followed by presentation by Dan Clarke.

  Threatened flora of the Cumberland Plain.

  Dan is a botanical consultant working in the NSW Ecological Industry – and runs his own company, Arcane Botanica. Dan is also the APS NSW Conservation Officer and editor of the Society’s excellent plant data base.

  His talk will cover the Cumberland Plain and its threatened vegetation, as well as several listed threatened flora species that Dan has monitored over the years for the NSW Saving our Species Program.

  Some of the important Cumberland Plain reserves will also be showcased, as well as profiling some threatened species of the Parramatta-Hills District.

• APS NSW Annual Weekend Get-together, Armidale, 1-3 November 2024

  Join us on the at Armidale on the Northern Tablelands, New South Wales, for a very exciting  weekend of nature, gardening, and art. 

  Registration fee:  
  

  $100, which includes morning tea, a boxed lunch and a two course dinner at the New  England Regional Art Museum on Saturday. 

  $35 for bus for all Saturday daytime venues. Only 57 places are available so book early  to ensure a seat. The bus cost will be kept separate as some people may wish to ‘tag  along’ in their car. A reserve list will be kept and a second bus may be organised. Full Registration (with bus) $135.

  All day, bus tour will take you to all daytime venues – remember there is a limited capacity of 57, so book early to ensure a seat.

  9:30am: Bus boards at Armidale Visitor Information Centre, 82 Marsh St., Armidale.

  9:45am: Arrive at Keith and Colleen Finlayson’s garden. Keith has successfully drafted many native plants over the years and has over 80 of these planted in his garden. Morning tea in the garden. (top photo)

  12 Noon: Boxed lunch at Kent House. Kent House is opposite the historic Central Park and is worth a stroll across to visit it with your lunch.

  1pm: Arrive at the Armidale Bicentennial Arboretum, Kentucky St., Armidale, for a tour.

  2:15pm: Arrive at Wollomombi Falls for a tour and a wander. The Falls are within the extensive Oxley wild Rivers National Park.

  4:15pm: Return to Armidale Visitor Information Centre to freshen up for evening event.

  6:30pm: New England Regional Art Museum, (NERAM) 106- 114 Kentucky Street, Armidale, for drinks, a two course dinner and a speaker. We will be seated in the east gallery which displays the outstanding Hinton Collection of early Australian Art.

  

  Museum Curator, Rachel Parsons, will speak about Howard Hinton and his collection. Dinner will be catered by the Six Counties Restaurant and offers four options of mains and three options of dessert. The bar will be open for attendees to purchase drinks by the glass (or canned soft drink).

  
  9.15pm:  Arrive back at the Information Centre

  Sunday, 3 November.

  The annual Armidale Garden Festival, 12 Barney St., Armidale. The Festival brings together nurseries, gardeners, garden suppliers, eco displays, garden ornaments and along with a great range of retail therapy with a vast array of stall holders. There will be inspiring gardens open both days. Entry to the Garden Festival entry is to be booked individually at a later date. We will advise you when bookings for the Festival open.
