Illawarra - Walk & talk about ferns

Dr Kevin Mills is a distinguished speaker and will firstly accompany the group for a walk at Croom Reserve, Albion Park where he has surveyed the plant species.

Following the walk Dr Mills will talk about Illawarra’s ferns at the group's shared clubhouse. Attendees may bring a fern for identification, information or discussion.

More information about Dr Mills:

Dr Kevin Mills is a botanist and ecologist who has lived in the Illawarra for over 45 years and has recently retired from environmental consultancy work. He is currently working on various projects, including studies of all offshore islands on the south coast, a field study and book of the ferns of the south coast, and various floristic and rare plant surveys. He has authored and co-authored several books on plants including Native Trees of Central Illawarra, Rainforests of the Illawarra District and Native Trees of the NSW South Coast. Kevin has had a long history of studying and writing about the flora of Norfolk Island, including a book on the visit to the island by colonial botanist Allan Cunningham in 1830.


Dr Mills is involved in the rehabilitation of habitat on the Five Islands Nature Reserve off Port Kembla and the regeneration of rainforest at the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre in Budderoo National Park. He is Chair of the NPWS South Coast Regional Advisory Committee and sometime member and Deputy Chair of the NPWS State Council.

The home page will soon show Pyrrosia rupestris known as the rock felt fern. It is a common fern of eastern Australia. Occurs as an epiphyte or lithophyte in areas of part shade and high moisture. Usually found in rainforest or moist eucalyptus forest. Often seen on rainforest trees, quite high above the ground. Photo by Michael Swire, Saddleback Mountain, Kiama May 2023.
