North Coast - Border Ranges National Park excursion

  • 13 Feb 2021
  • 9:00 AM
  • Border Ranges National Park via Kyogle

The newly formed sub branch of Coffs Harbour Group is holding its first outing in 2021 a bit further afield with a full day trip to explore some of the highlights of the Border Ranges National Park.

We will be leaving from Kyogle,  having a wander through some of the beautiful rainforest in the park, and visiting the amazing Antarctic Beach Tree and The Pinnacles Lookout.

➢ 9:00am – Meet at the Sugarbowl Café 143 Summerland Way Kyogle for a pre expedition coffee

➢ 9.30am – depart for Border Ranges National Park, via Wiangaree and Lynches Creek Road (note – the eastern entry via the Murwullimbah Road is closed due to a landslide).

➢ 10:30 – Pit stop at the Forest Top Camp Ground if required before proceeding to Brindle Creek Picnic Area for a rainforest walk. There are two short rainforest loops to explore, each about 1km in length.

➢ 12:30 – Arrive at the Antarctic Beech Picnic Ground. Visit the Antartic Beach, Look over the Gondwana Rainforest and have some lunch.

➢ 1:30 – Depart for The Pinnacle Walk and Lookout – A 0.6km return walk to the lookout with views over the rainforest, Tweed Valley and Wollumbin (Mount Warning).

➢ 2:30 – Depart for Kyogle

Trip Information

The road – it is about 40 km from Kyogle to our main stops. The last 25km or so is a well maintained gravel road, narrow in some sections but readily negotiated by 2wd vehicles. The NPWs website does warn that it can be a bit rough and slippery after rain, but I’ve driven it recently in a 2WD and found it easy to negotiate.

What to Bring

Bring your lunch and something to share for morning tea,  enough drinking water for the day, sunscreen insect repellant.

Wear sturdy walking shoes.  The walks are short, but the Brindle Creek walks involve uneven ground and a few steps. A hat and weather protective clothing are also recommended.

There are a couple of sunny picnic tables at our lunch spot, but if you want shade, bring a picnic rug or chair.

Other Information

There are toilet facilities at Forest Tops Campground which we pass on the way there and back, and also at our lunch stop at the Antarctic Beech Picnic Area.

Mobile phone coverage is limited, but I’ve had coverage at high points such as the Antarctic Beech Picnic Area.

Tight parking at some locations in the park mean numbers are limited to 20 people.  If Covid regulations  allow at the time, car sharing might be the go, depending on numbers and meeting at Kyogle should allow us to arrange this.

If you would like to attend please email Deb on debfoster5d@gmail.com.

Note: preference given to members if numbers too high.
